- José Saramago is the only Portuguese with a Nobel Prize in Literature.
- Luís de Camões and Fernando Pessoa are usually referenced as the greatest Portuguese poets of all time.
- Like other romantic languages, it has no equivalent for "it" nor a neutral third person personal pronoun (like the Finnish "hän") and every noun has a gender (even inanimate objects).
